Short Biography / Peter H.-T. Liu (劉顯達)
Dr. Peter Liu received his degree from Colorado State University in 1972 and served as a Postdoctoral Fellow for one year in 1973 at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. His expertise is in experimental and applied fluid mechanics. He served for 28 plus years as a Senior Scientist at Flow Industries, Inc. where waterjet technology was developed and commercialized in the late 1970s’. Dr. Liu had the opportunity to participate in investigating the complex three-phase flow phenomenon of abrasive waterjets early on and witnessed the rapid maturing and growth of this technology. He is an Associate Fellow of AIAA. He had served as an affiliated faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Washington (2002 - 2007) and as a Visiting Specialist at Hydrotech Research Center, NTU (2002 - 2003). He recently completed a 3-month term serving as an Alma Mater Visiting Professor at the Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering, National Cheng Kung University.
Dr. Liu joined OMAX Corporation in 2005 to establish an R&D program with the goal of securing external funding to advance waterjet technology. His research activities focus on waterjet precision and micro machining. Since commercialized in the late 1970s’, waterjet technology has come a long way in being elevated from merely a niche cutter to a precision machine tool with a great potential for micromachining. According to Frost and Sullivan (www.frost.com), waterjet machine tool has emerged as the fastest growing segment in the overall machine tool industry for the past decade and this same trend is expected to continue for the next decade. The main impediment to prevent it from growing even faster has been the lack of awareness.
Dr. Liu took this opportunity to promote waterjet technology to the local academia and industrial communities. One of his goals is to help establish a “Waterjet Machining R&D Center” for education/research purpose (refer to a similar program at MIT - http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Special-Programs/SP-777Spring-2005/CourseHome/). During December 2009 through 28 February 2010, he was invited to deliver seven seminars on waterjet precision and micro machining at National Cheng Kung University, National Taiwan University (two lectures), Industrial Technology and Research Institute, Delta Electronics (Neihu Headquarters), Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Hong Kong University of Sciences and Technology. During the seven seminar presentation, he has advocated the versatility of waterjet technology with the “4M” of waterjet technology – “from Macro to Micro and for Most Materials”. Such versatility can hardly be matched with other established machine tools.
Dr. Liu strongly believes that embracing and further developing this technology here in Taiwan would help raise the competitiveness of its manufacturing sector, including both large and small businesses. He sincerely calls for our alumni to help the course of promoting waterjet technology in Taiwan!
